Why Choose Net Snippets? |
It’s not just because Net Snippets delivers superior
functionality. While that’s true, functionality isn’t the only
criteria you should be considering. You’re choosing an
application that will store the results of long hours of online
research. You need to be sure that your research findings are
- Always available (even if the program you originally
stored them in is no longer supported by its vendor)
- Viewable and usable by other
programs too (the information, after all, belongs to you, not
to the program you originally stored it in)
- Covered by your usual disk backup or
file-copy procedures (you don’t want to have to back them up
separately, because you’re bound to forget, and anyway, who
wants the hassle of doing it?)
- Accessible fast
So there are some important points you should check -
especially when the product runs inside the browser: |
|
Does the program comply with industry standards? |
Net Snippets does. It’s geared to providing effective and
flexible use and re-use of your research findings. In order to
do that, a program must
- Store the information in standard formats
- Maintain direct open access to the information stored
Programs that store the information in a proprietary database
don’t pass this test. Net Snippets does – it stores the
information directly on the file system (by default under My
Documents / My Snippets). An html file will be stored as
standard html, other documents and emails are stored in their
original formats or as plain text. This means you can access the
information directly if you need to, without being dependent on
any third party applications. |
|
|
|
Why this is so important: |
- You can use and manipulate the information you saved in
Net Snippets using other applications (Office programs,
editors, convertors, search engines and so on). For example;
because the information is stored in a standard format on your
file system, a third party application like the Google Desktop
Search can index and search your Net Snippets content. Or, if
you want to edit an image you saved from the web using your
image editor of choice, you can simply open the file and edit
it from your file system.
- You can always access the
information stored in Net Snippets directly from your file
system.
- You are not married to Net Snippets
for life, your information is always accessible even if you
decide in the future to stop using Net Snippets, or to move to
another application. Whereas if your information is stored in
an application that uses a proprietary database, divorce from
its vendor is likely to be anything from difficult to
downright impossible.
- Since Net Snippets stores your
information directly via your file system, all your research
findings get backed up just like any other file on your
computer. But your standard backup doesn’t work on a
proprietary database – so if you’re using an application that
stores the information in a proprietary format, and that file
gets corrupted, you lose all your work. Repeat: that means
everything you ever did using that application.

High Performance and Stability |
Performance and stability are important in all applications,
especially in those that run inside your browser. Many vendors
don’t invest enough in optimizing for performance and stability.
As a result, their application slows down your browser or
computer, or even causes the browser to crash or freeze (and of
course it’s always just when you found the information you were
looking for!). Net Snippets is optimized for minimal
consumption of system resources:
- Net Snippets is
light and fast, because it was developed using the C++ ATL
framework, a language optimized for size and performance.
- Net Snippets
consumes minimal computer resources: unlike some other
programs, it doesn’t run processes in the background, or
consume CPU resources when not in direct use. That’s another
reason why it doesn’t slow your computer down like they do.
- Net Snippets weighs
in at just 2.3 MB – it’s quick to download and install.
- It’s used daily by
tens of thousands of users, and well-known for its stability
and high performance.

Back to the “superior functionality” part. Let’s make
good our claim: |
- Net Snippets was designed for
high end business and academic research - we designed it
with and for information professionals, librarians, academics
and business professionals. A large and very active portion of
our users do intensive research, re-use and post-processing of
information. They need rich functionality, flexibility and a
collaborative frameset. That’s why they bought Net Snippets.
- Net Snippets also addresses
the high end needs of large enterprises, including the need
for collaboration - in fact it’s the only provider of
complementing collaborative enterprise products. The Net
Snippets Enterprise Server is a highly effective,
user-friendly research collaboration environment, used in fast
moving companies in industries such as high-tech, biotech and
law firms. It’s specifically designed for organizations doing
dynamic research, which depend critically on effective
collaboration during the research process, and timely
dissemination of findings.
- Recognition in the academic
and professional markets. Net Snippets is heavily used in
the academic and professional market, with 30 universities
using the application on a site license basis, and thousands
of individual end users.
- Vision, creativity and
leadership in the space. Net Snippets was the first
company to release a product in the post-search space. Since
the introduction of the first version, Net Snippets has been
setting the standards and feature set for the space,
‘inspiring’ its competition.
